Three friends and a batch of hammocks.
Our story started in the winter of 2017, with three friends from Ecuador — Jose, Juan Xavier, and Felipe — and a simple yet ambitious idea: create a brand that respects the environment and elevates the people behind each piece. Remu began as a travel hammock company inspired by Ecuador's Amazon Rainforest, planting a tree for every hammock sold. But waiting on that first batch, we realized we couldn't answer the basic questions: who made these? Where? Under what conditions, out of what materials? Discovering the answers led us to a turning point — one that changed our path and anchored us in Ecuador for good, committed to sustainable fashion and responsible craftsmanship.

The question
No answers about the hands, the conditions, or the materials — in our own supply chain, and everywhere we looked in fashion. The answers mattered more than the hammocks.

We found Raquel Llumiquinga — and around her home studio, a family network of seamstresses, a blacksmith, and weaving families. One community deep.
Signed work
Small runs, no restocks, and every garment labeled with the name of the artisan who made it. When you hand it down, the name goes with it.

Today, every Remu piece is handcrafted by artisans from rural Ecuadorian communities. These talented women work from home, in environments that let them stay with their families while earning fair wages — a way to become independent through their skills and take agency of their present and their future. By partnering with them, we're supporting more than a livelihood; we're supporting a legacy. Every stitch, seam, and detail carries a piece of Ecuador's cultural heritage, crafted to stand the test of time and wear in beautifully.

The answer turned out to be people.
Not a factory — a floor of Raquel's home in Miranda, looms in Peguche worked by the same families for generations, Tagua buttons carved by Amada outside Quito. We stopped looking for suppliers and started building around people we could name.
One country. Three crafts. One name on the label.
Everything we make is born in the Ecuadorian Andes — sewn in Miranda, woven in Peguche, buttoned with Tagua carved outside Quito, designed between Quito and Brooklyn. Every piece leaves with the name of the person who made it.
What we stand for.
The environmental crisis is our motivation to run this business differently: a circular, responsible model — upcycled textiles where we can find them, natural, organic, or recycled fibers where we can't, and no toxic chemicals near our seamstresses, our clients, or the land.
The economic empowerment of women is fundamental. Remu works with seamstresses from rural communities to handcraft each piece, enabling them to become independent through their skills and provide for their families.
We challenge the idea that cheap matters more than the people who make things — safe, comfortable working conditions and above-average wages, so the people behind our garments have the tools to break the poverty cycle.
In Latin America the assumption is that profitable means exploitative. We're proving a business can pay well, work safely, and use natural, upcycled materials — and inspire others to do the same.
